Coup d’Etat & Apple Pie

by Paul Sinclair December 13, 2020
by Paul Sinclair December 13, 2020

Failed coup d’etat in the rest of the world results in plotters being imprisoned and ostracized. In America, aspirants to failed coup d’etat and dictatorship are congressmen and women, and a United States president. They now see it as a path to minority leadership – to a future of undemocratically elected Republican legislators and presidents. Where democracy is dependent on or influenced by black voters, this set of authoritarian racists see it as neither valid nor legitimate. Where an authoritarian narcissist sits in the Oval Office, he sees it as an inconvenience.

In early December, more than 120 of the 196 Republican members of the House of Representatives signed their names to a December 10, 2020 amicus brief on Thursday in support of a ludicrous Texas lawsuit filed at the U.S. Supreme Court seeking to block the election results in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia. Effectively, they sought to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election by a “legal coup d’etat” and install Donald Trump in office for a second term. Call it, “Belarus coming to America.” Gaslighting the pillars of American democracy is now as American as mom’s apple pie.

Republican Coup d’Etat Plotters

The lawsuit, which the Supreme Court rejected outright Friday evening, looked to throw out the results in four states that Biden won: Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Notably, the key to Biden winning those states was a heavy African American turnout. So, the wanna-be dictator’s adherents followed Trump’s lead in publicly registering their contempt for African-American voters. The courts dismissed that nuisance almost as soon as it was filed.

Filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a man who is likely months away from indictment for corruption, and joined by 17 other Republican state attorney generals, the lawsuit invented some “Kraken” logic to assert that there is no way that Joe Biden could have legally received over 7 million more votes than Trump. SCOTUS didn’t even give them a hearing before booting the suit as a waste of time.

But the remarkable thing is that one hundred and twenty-six Republican members of Congress signed on to the attempted “legal coup” to bring democracy to an end in America. Among them is Kevin McCarthy – the man who will be Speaker of the House should Republicans win control of the House in two years. As Trump’s Kraken team invoked the name of the long-dead Hugo Chavez as somehow having helped Joe Biden win the election, it seems that McCarthy and his bunch of merry men and women are more fit to preside over Venezuela than the United States of America.

In American politics, the third bracnch of government is reluctant to sanction members of the first and second branch, as it often does to individuals. So look for this idiocy to continue for months to come.
