I might be showing my age but one of my favorite Saturday Night Live (SNL) skits was Chevy Chase’s many updates on the status of Spain’s dead dictator, Generalisimo Franciso Franco:
“Top Story tonight, Generalisimo Francisco Franco is still dead!” “Doctors say his condition is unchanged – Generalisimo Francisco Franco has been critically dead now for eleven weeks. Although Generalisimo Franco’s condition has improved. He’s still seriously dead!”
Some forty-three years after Franco’s death, Spain’s new socialist government is dealing him one final blow – reconfirming his “deadness” by exhuming his ashes and tossing them out of the respected civil war-dead mausoleum. Franco’s grandson, Francis Franco, told Spanish newspaper La Razon, “Of course we will take charge of the remains of my grandfather. We won’t leave them in the hands of the government.” Of course you won’t Francis, not with hostile socialists in power. Who would? As a proud descendant of the tyrant, you have an important role to ensure that, at the end of the day, the world remembers that Generalisimo Franciso Franco is still dead – as dead as a doornail.
